VIDEO: FIX8: Medium Machining and Roughing

Hey there.  Today I want to talk to you about the new turning solution from Kennametal for medium machining and roughing, FIX8™.   FIX8™ works great in steels, stainless steel, and cast iron and delivers maximum metal removal rates. It's ideal for uninterrupted cuts, interrupted cuts, and heavily interrupted cuts.

Let’s take a closer look. FIX8™ inserts have eight cutting edges that increases the productivity of any heavy-duty turning operation, providing the lowest cost per edge. The insert pocket is tangentially oriented. Look at what a difference the orientation makes. The orientation of FIX8™ provides a lot more carbide in between the work piece and the pocket. That's very good, especially for roughing applications.

And this is how the insert is mounted. This clamp stud makes it a very rigid clamping system.  It pulls the insert securely into the pocket seat and this clamping screw holds everything in place. This enables the insert to withstand large cutting forces and vibrations for optimal performance.  I spoke about how FIX8™ puts more carbide in between the work piece and the pocket seat. There's even more carbide here.  The replaceable carbide shim protects the pocket from any potential deformation and damage that can occur in heavy roughing applications.

FIX8™ has standard square shank tool holders and quick-change cutting units with PSC and KM back ends.  The square shank holders are available with and without through coolant.  All through coolant holders feature precision 3D coolant technology. That means there are three coolant nozzles directed to the rake face controlling temperature, chip evacuation, and supporting chip formation. Coolant exit holes in two different locations are directed toward the flank of the insert, controlling the heat in the cutting zone and prolonging tool life. 3D coolant technology supplies sufficient coolant precisely where it's needed.

Let's recap. FIX8™ is a great solution for medium machining and roughing applications. Works great in steels, stainless steel, and cast iron. From smooth cuts to heavily interrupted cuts, FIX8™ can do it all—feed rates of up to 1.4 millimeters and depths of cut of up to 12 millimeters.
