Greenfield Industries gives a tutorial of the four basic styles of taps in the marketplace today in this video.

There are basically four styles of taps that exist in the marketplace today. The hand tap has straight flutes and comes in either a taper, plug or bottoming chamfer. It's designed to be used in either a through hole or a shallow blind hole. The spiral point tap has straight flutes with a left-handed spiral shear at the point that cuts off the chips and shoots it forward in front of the thread being produced. It's the strongest chip cutting tap and should be used in through holes only. Watch this short video to learn about the other two styles of taps, the spiral fluted tap and the forming tap.
