Welcome to OSG's 60-second troubleshooting video. Drill runout is a problem that can occur in machining when the machine or the tool holder is not properly aligned along a central axis, causing the drill to flare out. This effect is more pronounced at the tip of the tool and especially when dealing with long overhangs.

In many cases a key indicator of runout is uneven tool wear, especially towards the margin and shoulder of the tool. One side of the tool is constantly pressed into the material due to the angle, resulting in rapid tool wear due to rubbing.

Additionally, the whole condition may be poor with scratches or rifling within and any through-hole, possibly a created burr at the exit side. A dial indicator is the easiest way to check for runout. If the indicator shows substantially different values on each of the drill lands it may imply excessive runout is present. However, no tool can have zero runout. Typically values under one thousandth of an inch are acceptable for runout, but smaller tools may require even more accurate setups to ensure a whole quality and tool life are optimized.
