Forward and back turning is nothing new; however, PrimeTurning offers the first and only tool on the market to combine all directional turning in one tool.

Metal cutting is an industry which has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to applications, materials and machining knowledge in several industries. However, rarely is there a product or methodology which contradicts common machining knowledge given its deep history. Introducing PrimeTurning with CoroTurn Prime tooling from Sandvik Coromant.

Forward and back turning is nothing new; however, PrimeTurning offers the first and only tool on the market to combine all directional turning in one tool. Capable of impressive metal removal rates with high speed turning, it incorporates the ability to do finishing without having to change the tool. Customers can benefit up to 80% productivity gains depending on their setup and operation by combining the PrimeTurning methodology with CoroTurn Prime tooling.

The main benefit of the reinvented turning methodology is the higher productivity in all facets of your machining operation. Instead of utilizing one insert edge like a typical insert, CoroTurn Prime inserts utilize three edges which allow customers to do more turning and get more output with less tools to make more parts in the same amount of time. Benefits in the form of tooling inventory, cost per part, time savings and productivity increases are all part of the package. One example of this is green turning of a pinon gear, an operation which once took one minute and 20 seconds to complete, can now take place in under 35 seconds. Simultaneous turning with an upper and lower turret also provides maximum machining efficiency. Another example is the production of an axle shaft where a customer replaced three conventional tools with one CoroTurn Prime tool. Now 12 seconds faster, this customer has optimized process security and saved more than $300,000 in operational costs.

CoroTurn Prime tools have been developed to be extremely flexible as well, whether doing internal or external rotating applications. With the CoroTurn Prime Serration Lock (SL) modular system head solution, it’s now possible to use the PrimeTurning methodology for internal turning. The inside-out machining capability allows for excellent chip evacuation and chip control. With the SL heads, you can create a wide range of tool combinations from a small inventory of adapters and cutting heads. Conveniently, you can also find the CoroTurn Prime tools equipped with axial tool holders, radial tool holders as well as multi-task tool holders so you can turbo-charge your machining operations.

“Close to 70 million cars are produced globally every year, and the numbers are growing,” says Hakan Ericksson, Product Manager of General Turning at Sandvik Coromant. “To cope with the competition, smooth production lines with few stops are critical.” This is where PrimeTurning comes into play, providing increased metal removal rates, tighter tolerances and better machine utilization that all translate into lower costs per component.
