drilling and tapping blind hole

we have a job that requires 300 #12/24 threaded holes approx. 1" deep

steel manufacturer gave us steel info   A36/44W A572 Gr50/ mostly nucor?(we work with aluminum extrusion not sure what those properties represent)

we have a tapmatic rx 30

looking to see what would be recommended drill and tap type for this application

Dear CDVOL,

A standard 12-24 bottoming tap thread length is 15/16 (minus your 2 chamfer threads of.0146) leaves you with .854 of usable thread. You could turn down the neck diameter of a standard so the chips could flow, but that is not recommended.  We are assuming that you want a 3B class of fit and that the material has not been heat-treated or annealed. You would use a #17 jobber drill (FL 2.1875" & Dia .1730), but the tap would be a special so that it would accomodate the required depth of thread. If you could email me your name & company name, I could send you a quote. Delivery on the tap would be 3-5 working days after receipt of approval & the drills would be a stocked item.  Please send email to Beth at  techteam-mw-sfdmailbox@mscdirect.com
