Like a car, CNCs need tuneups. We hear from customers and machinists that machine recalibration is a pain in the back side. We've heard extreme cases where special engineers have to be flown in at expensive rates, and there is a lot of trial and error to get the machine back to acceptable low error rates.
What if there was technology that could perform recalibration automatically and without the need for a specialist?
A proof of concept out of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Virginia with technology from Siemens and Bonsai AI outperformed the expectations of researchers.
It resulted in an automated recalibration system that ran more than 30 times faster in the test environment than the human operators, “achieving an error rate of less than two microns in one to four iterations.”
It’s an impressive research milestone. You can read all about it. And learn more about AI and machine learning on Better MRO.
