What is loud?

Many people work in jobs that have consistently loud decibel levels, including:

How can you protect against loud?
No matter what you are exposed to, you need to protect your vital sense of hearing. There are different types of hearing protection that may suit your needs.
- Earplugs that can come in a variety of shapes and sizes
- Earmuffs that go over the ears
- Banded hearing protectors have soft ear tips on a flexible band, which allows you to quickly take off and on as needed, while keeping your hearing protection on you at all times.
You also need to know how to select the right kind of hearing protection for the sounds that you’re exposed to, the ease of use, what will be comfortable and your communication requirements. Each package of hearing protection is labeled by law with a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). The NRR is calculated in a lab setting where the product is tested under ideal conditions. You must adjust this measurement due to what you are exposed to in real life.
Think of NRR like miles-per-gallon (MPG) for a car.
