National Preparedness Month occurs every September and encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools and communities.

National Preparedness Month is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency within the Department of Homeland Security. National Preparedness Month is part of a governmental effort to strengthen the United States' preparedness capabilities. The national preparedness architecture encompasses prevention, protection, response, and recovery efforts to prepare the United States for all hazards – whether terrorist attack or natural disaster.

The aims are to encourage individuals to take important steps like getting an emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan, being informed about the different emergencies that may affect them, as well as taking the necessary steps to get trained and become engaged in community preparedness and response efforts.

To learn more about how you can prepare for emergencies in your home and communities, go to the official website of the Department of Homeland Security.

Hello - I work in the Business Continuity Department at my work and last year I held a preparedness campaign "poster contest" for the children of our employees based on the slogan "Be Prepared Not Scared." Is there a new slogan for 2020? I'd like to run the program again for our employees' children and get started on that soon. Thank you, Susan
Hi Susan, thanks for visiting Better MRO! From what we can tell, there has not yet been an update to the slogan and several organizations participating this year appear to be using the 2019 "Be Prepared Not Scared" slogan. However, on the 2020 Preparedness calendar, there is another slogan you can probably make use of: "Resolve to Be Ready." It is part of a winter campaign on the calendar, but would definitely apply to any area of preparation. You can find the full 2020 calendar here: https://www.ready.gov/calendar
