We just got a call from a machinist who was having trouble turning a bore into silicon carbide. He has been using several different coated carbide grades and hasn’t been successful.
We recommended a Cubic Born Nitride (CBN) insert for this application. The CBN inserts are made to cut 60Rc material and harder. We also recommend that you use a boring bar that will fit a CBN insert into its pocket.
How would you have approached this?
