speeds and feeds

We hear a lot about CNC machining, most recently we had a machinist call in who was drilling stainless steel pipe 10” in dia with an indexable drill through one side. Entering in the side means drilling into the 5” radius. Entry was not flat. The inserts exploded shortly after entering the part. He was using a 15/16 4xd indexable trigon drill running 400 rpm and 3.25 ipm, not spotting the hole first.

We checked feeds and speeds found them to be off. Our recommendation was to run at 1725rpm and 5.25 ipm but when entering the part slow feed down to 1.5 ipm until fully engaged in the part.
