The KenTIP™ FS is a modular drilling system with inserts that cover the entire front part of the drill. The coupling is completely protected from chip flow and protected from contact with the workpiece. Let's talk about the applications. KenTIP™ FS covers a lot—blind holes, through holes, inclined exits, stacked materials, and now also flat bottom drilling with the brand new FEG points. FEG inserts allow machining holes in steel and cast iron that require a flat bottom, performing two operations in one by eliminating the end milling process.
It features a 180° point geometry, a corner chamfer to reduce bur formation, and 4 margin lands for hole straightness and stability on inclined exits. In conjunction with the other KenTIP™ FS inserts, the new FEG insert can be utilized as a pilot drill point for deep hole applications as well. Let's see what this new KenTIP™ FS FEG insert can do.
We'll start with a pilot hole on this block of 4140 steel. We're using a 1 x D drill body with a diameter of 12.5mm on an inclined entry. Then, we'll drill the rest of the hole with a 12 x D drill body and the HPG insert. Next, we'll drill with a flat entry using a 12.5mm diameter FEG insert on an 8 x D drill body with an inclined exit in this block of GG40 cast iron. Next, to show exactly how the FEG insert enters the material, we're going to drill into the shoulder of this 4140 steel block at 80% radial engagement to show you exactly how the FEG insert engages the material from top to bottom.
Next, we'll take it in between this block of 4140 steel and this block of GG40 cast iron with coolant then we'll do the same thing again but dry. Nice. Look at that flat bottom.
