The adoption of lean manufacturing might ultimately be less a choice than a need, suggests Brajendra Mishra, who leads a pair of centers focused on manufacturing and sustainability research at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

He discusses why and how recycling, along with the migration to new technologies, will be essential to metalworking in the coming years and will drive machine shops to adopt lean manufacturing practices.
